A popular and reoccurring theme for birthday parties is the 1980s theme. This theme allows for numerous ideas including not only the unmistakeable 80s fashion of big hair, big shoulder pads and fluoro colours, but inspirations from characters in popular films, bands and games. Next time you have a themed costume party to attend, try one of these 80s inspired costumes to memorably portray the decade.

A mullet hair style
A simple way for men to follow the 80s hair fashion is to wear a mullet, mullet wigs can be purchased at most cheap stores for only a few dollars and are the best way to achieve a look that is typically 80s. Women simply need to make their hair as BIG as possible, teasing and crimping hair are a great way to do this. Side pony tails with brightly coloured scrunchies, or visas worn upside down were also popular.

Pac Man
The Pac Man arcade game was introduced in the 80s and is a great idea for an easy homemade costume. Simply dress all in black and using coloured card cut out the shapes of the games characters and join together with string like a sandwich board. The costume can be worn over the shoulders and is a great idea for couples or groups as several colours of the costume can be made. What makes it more appealing is that it will only cost a few dollars to make and can be easily taken on and off.

Ghostbusters
The Ghostbusters film is a great idea for a costume as the uniform worn by the main characters is easily recognisable and can be quite a comfortable costume too.

Ghost Busters

Back to the Future
Another popular 80s film was Back to the Future, dressing up as main characters Marty McFly or the "Doc" can be a fun way to relive the decade and dress to impress fellow party goers. The Doc can be particularly fun as a white lab coat can be worn along with a white wig and goggles.

Top Gun
The Top Gun film is another easily recognisable film idea to be inspired by. The uniform wore by the characters is typically 80s and much like the Ghost Busters costume, it too would be comfortable to wear to a party.

Get Physical
Draw inspiration from Olivia Newton Johns hit song 'Physical', and dress in Lycra body suits, bright coloured tights, head bands, sweat bands and leg warmers. This will make you stand out in a crowd and may also motivate you to exercise.

Any one of these costumes will have you looking distinctively 80s and ready to party back in time.
