I scream for ice cream

"There it is!" I shouted triumphantly to my friends, my smug "I-saw-it-first-therefore-am-better-than-you" inherent in my tone.

"Uh, no", says a friend. That's just a place that SERVES Berthillon ice cream.

Oh.

It's an easy mistake to make- as you approach the Berthillon store on the Île Saint-Louis, you're bombarded by cafes with signs proudly proclaiming that they, too, serve this (frozen) nectar of the gods. But we weren't having it- we wanted the original store.

Tiny, unassuming, and not very well laid out- so proceeds a trip to Berthillon Paris, the famous ice cream I sampled recently. I'm a bit of an ice cream snob- I think the gelati in Adelaide is pretty good- so, I was prepared to be only slightly impressed.

Well, were my socks knocked off. I could try for half an hour to explain why this ice cream was so good, but I'd probably fail. You know what good ice cream tastes like, and you know what bad ice cream tastes like. Sometimes that's just it. Well Berthillon ice cream was ten times better than the previous best ice cream I've had.

Probably the standout thing at Berthillon that I CAN put my finger on was the flavour intensity. I didn't find the selection of flavours overwhelmingly diverse, but I ended with one scoop Raspberry, and one scoop Salted Butter Caramel. That the Raspberry happened to taste exactly like frozen jam served me well on that sunny Paris spring day, and with one taste of my Salted Butter Caramel I felt I had finally understood the appeal of salt and caramel together, where most others had failed. It's the butter! Maybe.

Two little scoops of heaven at Berthillon Paris

As with many food experiences in Paris, Berthillon is not comparatively cheap- but it tastes a million times better than a McDonald's soft serve. It's not going to break the bank to treat yourself to this little piece of Paris, and I urge you not to miss out.

Oh, and-trust me on this- get two scoops.
