When was the last time you went to Berlin? For me, it was just the other Friday night.
I was back at work on Saturday morning –how on earth?
Well, lucky for me, Berlin is actually in Melbourne – just off Little Bourke St. In true Melbourne fashion, the best bars are also the hardest to find, and Berlin Bar is tucked into a little laneway with no signage out the front.
Upon ascending the unassuming staircase with an eerie red light tinge, press the doorbell for service (reminiscent of the old Prohibition days when bars had to remain secret). Once inside, you will find the Berlin wall may not have fallen after all and a choice of loyalty has to be made - opt for the luxury of West Berlin (an opulent champagne lounge with chandeliers and class) or go for the rough and tumble of East Berlin, with bunk beds, crates and a distinct economy class vibe.
The menu (German passport style) has such unusual concoctions to confuse the senses such as a pumpkin and white chocolate cocktail, and more tame options like the sweetly named Love Parade (sweet and pink, perfect for a girls night out). A variety of German beers and worldly wine choices are also on offer, to make even the most fussiest of your group find something of interest.
Berlin Bar is open everyday except Monday and Tuesday, and is found at 16 Corrs Lane, Melbourne (enter off Little Bourke St between Russell St and Exhibition St).
