The Beqa Adventure Divers base is located in Pacific Harbour. It's convenient if you're staying in a nearby resort, but even if you're not, you'll be able to organise transport from most hotels in Suva, Nadi, or Denarau. Beqa offer a range of different dives and experiences, but if you're a first time diver and you're not planning to work towards your licence, PADI Discover Scuba is your only option.
Before heading out to the water you'll need to go over some paperwork, and read a brochure about diving. This is a quick introduction to the ins and outs, but you'll learn a lot more once you get a bit wet.
In a lot of first time dive experiences, you'll need to practice in a confined water session (like a swimming pool) for a few days before you get to go exploring. At Beqa they'll give you an introductory dive in a controlled environment first, and you'll get to go out to the reef on the same day. It makes this a great option if you'd like to experience scuba diving, but don't have much time.
Once you're confident enough with using the scuba equipment, and with all the safety information and signals, it's time to hit the open water. Your instructor will lead you through the coral reefs, with each dive being different depending on the divers and the instructor.
Being able to see everything underwater is pretty cool, but the most amazing thing is being able to breathe. It is an incredible feeling to swim through the water with ease, breathing freely and without your body feeling the urge to float to the surface. Even if you've found yourself with fears of the open ocean, your scuba experience will help you forget them for a while.
If your first time scuba dive whets your appetite for more, you can always start with your PADI Open Water Certification. Otherwise, even if you never dive again, you'll be able to tick scuba diving off your list as an experience unlike any other.
Beqa Adventure Divers feature a group of instructors who know their stuff, they're up for a laugh, but they'll also make sure you feel safe and confident on your first dive.
Make sure you bring a camera along, and if you don't own an underwater camera you can pick up a disposable one easily enough. Other than that, all your scuba gear and wet suits can be supplied, you'll just need to bring along yourself and a bathing suit. Experiencing Fiji from underwater is a must-do, and Beqa Adventure Divers can help you out.
