Pizza for breakfast? Hangover, or no hangover, I've never been one to baulk at that concept. So it was this week that I found myself at Benzina - the early-rising sister of Pizzeria Violetta, Kenmore's popular Italian pizza restaurant which, appropriately enough, bears a name inspired by the Italian word for 'fuel'.
The Benzina vibe is relaxed and casual, with a host of Italian breakfast options, chief among them a selection of tasty panuozzo, a type of bread-and-pizza hybrid which comes stuffed with fillings after being baked in Benzina's custom-made wood-fired oven.
I chose the 'duo' panuozzo which featured mozzarella, pumpkin, pork sausage and porcini mushrooms. It was melt in the mouth. My sweeter toothed companion opted for the nutella and banana combination which arrived with a generous dusting of icing sugar. Other options include avocado and feta with lemon, and mozzarella, ham, tomato and rocket.
Our mouths were also watering at the sight of other meals emerging from the oven before being whisked away to a neighbouring table - like the the Mediterranean Morning Pizzetta, a wood-fired pizza with ham (or pancetta), organic free range eggs, tomato, spinach and fior di latte (a form of mozzarella).
Looking for something on the lighter side? Acai bowls (incorporating berries, bananas, house granola, shredded coconut and mixed seeds) also feature while sweet options including Nonna's tiramisu, or pear and ricotta cake, will always have a place no matter how early the hour.
This pocket-sized pizzeria is a kitchen, bar and dining area all in one. Author image.
Drinks at Benzina include cold pressed juices and drinks, including the delicious-sounding green cleanse (spinach, apple, cucumber, organic aloe, honey, and turmeric root), and a range of full-bodied coffees, teas and matchas. Meanwhile, the popularity of iced teas (including lemon, lychee, green or Thai milk tea) is rising in line with Summer temperatures. Saluti!
