Generous slices, pretty good prices, and a really tasty selection.
Ben's is located at 123 MacDougal St, right in the thick of Greenwich Village nightlife. It's a good thing, because this is not a gourmet restaurant where you talk with business colleagues about wine and golf, but more like a late-night drunken stopover. That being so, the pizza is actually very delicious junk food, glistening with grease, loaded with cheese, and starting at $2.75 for a plain cheese slice, which is good, but not unusual value for New York.
The atmosphere is definitely not for everyone. It was at least 2:00am when I was there and while I was eating a couple drunk guys had an hour-long argument that nearly came to blows over a ten dollar pair of headphones.
The fight was prevented because the customers and staff talked them out of it very reasonably, which really attested to the good nature of the place, even if it's not very homely. If you're open to a slightly gritty atmosphere, which is kind of a necessity of New York night life anyway, Ben's can provide plenty of fun and stories.
Another draw card is the appearance of Ben's on the TV show Louie. In the opening credits, Louie Ck quickly wolfs down a big cheesy slice while standing up before rushing to a gig at the nearby Comedy Cellar.
If you're a fan of the show, enjoy a cheap, tasty bite of unique independent junk food, and want to see some colourful NY culture, Ben's Pizzeria is a sure thing. Just don't bring your grandparents there after midnight.
