The Bennett is located in the back streets of Hamilton and prides itself on being part of the community. Built in 1865, it has been through many incarnations and an earthquake. Since January 2019, it has been in the hands of brothers Daniel and Joel Turner and their friend Simon Turner, who have brought it into the 21st century with extensive renovations whilst maintaining the original character and charm of the building. The Bennett now has a clean bright interior and a colourful retro-styled north facing beer garden that seats 120 patrons.

Whilst ensuring typical pub grub is on the menu , there are interesting additions such as a weekly changing pot pie special, crab toast, Korean fried chicken and there are plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options available. The sweet potato fries accompanying my seafood chowder pot pie were the best I have had in a long time and the pie was truly delicious. Children under 12 can get a meal and ice cream for $10 and on Sundays, their meals are free (one with each adult meal purchase). On Friday to Sunday, the kitchen is open from midday to 9pm for all-day dining, whereas on Monday to Thursday, lunch is midday to 3pm, dinner 5:30pm to 9pm.

24 beer taps are onsite with a 5-6 tap rotation of quality craft beers and the drinks list has wines and cocktails. There are evening food specials and entertainment such as live music and DJs on the weekends. The staff are friendly and helpful and The Bennett has a great welcoming atmosphere.
