Benjamin Vozzo Exhibition - #inthe & #1076 ;& #1091 ;& #1100 ;& #1085 ;& #1077 ;

It was 9am and I was staring bleary eyed at my computer screen, trying to remember exactly what it was that I did for a living. The aftermath of a night well spent. Local artist Ben Vozzo last week opened his exhibition - #inthe & #1076 ;& #1091 ;& #1100 ;& #1085 ;& #1077 ;, an Arabic Chechen word spelt "dunya" - designed to be reflective of some of the demographic that resides in the area. At the same time, Ben opened our eyes to the beauty that is the inner Sydney housing commission.

Using a simple range of media include his iPhone, camera and social media, Ben creates his masterpieces, displaying striking photography, pieces chosen from the expansive collection of snaps Ben has taken in Redfern, Waterloo and Surry Hills. Inspired by a "fusion of beauty and tragedy", as Ben puts it, his works suck you into a world unbeknownst to many of us, teetering along the fine edge between poverty and modern life. Bens aim was to "capture the euphoria of being connected to the world via complex and undiscovered spaces". Ben achieves this by not only creating impressive art, but a "world" in which to display it.

Set in the back alleys of Surry Hills, Ben joined forces with the gregariously charming Claire Lancaster, or Madam Bornhoffen to create a warehouse space filled with the subtle sounds of Arabic beats mixed in the corner over makeshift decks.
I was greeted warmly by sultry by striking punk-femmes brandishing vodka bottles and oozing temptation. Pillars were adorned in Arabic scripture and the lighting creative a strangely cool yet warming atmosphere. An eclectic mix of artists, lefties, hipsters and surprisingly young (and slightly lost looking) "lads". We mused that these young boys in their flat caps might have wandered in on the promise of free beer – inadvertently being sucked into a world they didn't quite understand, but seemed to be absorbing with child-like enthusiasm.

In quick succession, pieces around the roomed adorned a red dot – indicating that they had been sold. By the end of the night it was difficult to spot a piece that wasn't crowned in red. The crowd was clearly delighted by such articulate yet refreshingly raw statements of the importance of social commentary through art.

If you blinked, you missed this stunning display lasting only a week. However Ben's pieces and social media can be found still at Facebook and on Tumblr . Let him lure you too into the world he has created.
