Bulletproof coffee, also known as a 'fat black' coffee, is a health craze sneaking into suburban kitchens and coffee shops around the world. At first I thought my friend had lost her mind when she told me she has butter in her coffee every single morning. My first reaction was to recoil - Blerg, why the freaking heck would you ruin a perfect cup of coffee! After trying it for myself and noticing the difference to my health and energy levels through the day, I was a convert.

My first time with a Bulletproof coffee was about about three months ago. The organic butter gave a surprisingly lovely creaminess to the drink, and blended in well with the taste of the coffee. My partner was less enthusiastic about the taste. Perhaps the possible physical benefits assisted my taste buds to accept this strange brew.

A well known advocate for this strange brew is Dave Asprey. Dave Asprey, claims that this concoction of good saturated fats and coffee will keep your energy levels up for six hours as well as providing you with improved cognitive function and may assist you to lose weight. My friends who drink a daily fat black have also experienced the sensation of an energy buzz, just as I do.

And while butter and coffee may sound like an unlikely combination, it has actually been consumed around the world for many years in countries such as Ethiopia and Tibet. Dave Asprey's initial experience of a fat black was a slightly different variation of the drink whilst hiking in the mountains of Tibet.

So how is it made? A tablespoon of organic butter from a grass fed cow or organic coconut oil is mixed with good black coffee. Whiz it up and sip from your favourite cup.

It is up to you whether you try a Bulletproof coffee with coconut oil or butter. Black coffee drinkers may prefer to use coconut oil. I personally prefer coconut oil and here is why:

- Coconut oil may fight off Alzeimer's disease and dementia.

- A study found that women who consumed 2 tablespoons of coconut oil daily (for 12 weeks) did not gain any more weight. They actually had lower amounts of fat around their belly. Belly fat is infamous for being difficult to lose and more importantly can contribute to diseases of the heart.

- Coffee has a tendency to spike insulin, while coconut oil is believed to help regulate blood sugar. Great for those of us (like myself) that are pre-diabetic (or in fact, diabetic).

- Coconut oil can boost thyroid function helping to increase metabolism, energy and endurance.

- It is known to be antibacterial, anti fungal, and can also help our bodies to fight virus and disease.

- It is anti-inflammatory.

- Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need.

- It may aid in digestion and assist your body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
