Four young offenders have been sent to an Indonesian village to help the locals rebuild after being hit by a tsunami. Unluckily for them, it turns out that there is more to be afraid of in Lombok than polluted water and disease.

Beneath Us is an independent horror comic, written by Joseph Oliveira and illustrated by Hernan Gonzalez. It is published by Afterlight Comics , an independent publisher based in Wales.

I picked this one up knowing nothing about it because I felt like trying something new from an indie creator, and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the art style, which suits the tone of the story. The setup is intriguing, but I don't feel like the reader gets much opportunity to get to know the characters in the first issue. Hopefully, that will start to change in issue #2 .

It's a little gruesome in parts, and sensitive readers should be warned not to get attached to the dog who appears in the first few pages.

Beneath Us is a fresh new(ish) independent horror comic, which has me interested enough to go back for more. Issue 1 was published in January 2022, and is available in both paper and digital formats. So far there are two issues out.

If you enjoy horror comics you might like Scott Snyder's Wytches , the 28 Days Later series or these .
