New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.
Make the most of Summer on Patrick White Lawns
Ben & Jerry's Openair Cinema is back for another year on Patrick White Lawns, in front of the National Library of Australia. This scenic location is right by Lake Burley Griffin and within in the Parliamentary Triangle, with ample parking around the Library and behind the International Flag Display. For most people, the best part of going to the Ben & Jerry's Openair Cinema is the festive atmosphere - with live music and free ice creams on Sundays, tasty food to enjoy while watching the movie, a variety of lounge options and the fun of watching a movie as the sun goes down. For families, it is an enjoyable way to watch the latest movies with the kids and for couples or groups of friends, it is a social time to watch a movie and catch up - perhaps with a frosty cold drink from the Jar Bar on site. There is a real Summertime mood at this event, as locals and visitors look forward to the sun going down and the entertainment to begin.
Over the five weeks of this outdoor event, there will be movies for every generation, with the latest releases as well as old school classics. Firstly for kids and families, there will be the school holiday blockbusters "Trolls", "Sing", "Ballerina" and "Moana" to enjoy, starting at sunset. Children under 4 are free (maximum two children per one adult) and over 5's need a ticket.
A popular day for all ages is the Sundae Sessions - with live music, games on the lawn, prizes to win and every movie-goer gets a free Ben & Jerry's ice cream! The Openair Cinema has six Sundays to pick from - if you have young kids there is "Trolls" (15th January) and "Sing" (5th February) for a family night out with the kids. The other Sundae Sessions are "Rogue One - A Star Wars Story" (22nd January), "Why Him?" (29th January), "La La Land" (12th February) and "Lion" on the last night (19th February).
On the other nights there is also a wide range of other movies to watch, including new favourites such as "The Founder", "Office Christmas Party", "Red Dog: True Blue" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", to old school classics such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". For a retro night that is sure to be popular, book your tickets to "Time Travel Tuesday: Grease Sing-A-Long" on Tuesday, 7th February.
There are also a number of ticketing options to choose from, depending if you want a comfier, more luxurious experience. There is the Star Lounge ticket which includes a glass of Giesen wine (or a non-alcoholic beverage), reserved bean lounger seating, a warm blanket in case of chilly breezes and service straight to your seat. Alternatively, there is the Volkswagen Polo Class ticket which includes entrance to the stylish Polo Class, reserved bean lounger seating with a blanket and cushion, a Ben & Jerry's shortie and a soft drink - with $2 from every ticket going to a local charity.
