Summer is on its way and with it comes Ben & Jerry's Openair Cinema at Glenelg. This is the very first year Adelaide has hosted the Openair Cinema, which is a hugely popular event interstate and will tour the nation this summer.
You can bask in a relaxed, festival-like vibe with music by day and movies by night. Screenings take place Tuesday to Sunday from December 1 until December 22, 2013. The massive outdoor screen will be set up at Brian Nadilo Reserve on the foreshore in front of the Glenelg Surf Club.
A variety of films are being screened over the three weeks. There are lots of new releases to choose from including About Time, The Great Gatsby, Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Rush, The Family, Thanks for Sharing, The Butler and The Counselor. There will also be some cult classics such as Labyrinth, Point Break and Grease Sing-a-Long, as well as family-friendly films like Despicable Me 2 and Turbo.
DJs will set the mood playing tunes prior to the screenings. To satisfy the movie munchies there will be a fully licensed bar and gourmet food vendors selling an array of food and drink.
Every Sunday is a "Sundae Session" with live music from local bands and free Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Get along on Sunday, December 1, 2013 to celebrate the opening night. There will be free ice cream, fun lawn games, great live music, goodie bags and free bean lounger or deck chair hire. Tickets for the opening night cost $25 when purchased online or $35 at the door.
The music program is yet to be announced but to give you a taste of what to expect, the Openair Cinema stage has previously hosted acts such as The Cat Empire, Kate Miller-Heidke, Kisschasy, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Dan Parsons.
Doors open at 6 pm every night and the screening will begin when the sun goes down at around 8.30 pm. It would be wise to arrive early, not only to soak up the atmosphere but also to choose a good spot as seating for general admission is unreserved. Make yourself comfortable with bean loungers, blankets and deck chairs that are available to hire.
For the best seat in the house you can purchase "Star Class" tickets for $35 online (or $40 at the door) which includes a bean lounger, blanket, a glass of Rekorderlig cider, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and reserved VIP seating.
Tickets are on sale now and are cheaper when purchased online (but will incur a booking fee). General admission tickets for adults cost $17 and concession is $13. Gather a group of four together and pay just $55. If the screening hasn't sold out, tickets can be purchased at the door on the day which will cost $22 for adults and $18 concession.
When the weather is warm Glenelg is one of the most popular destinations in Adelaide and it is the perfect location for Ben & Jerry's Openair Cinema. So head along to enjoy music, movies, ice cream and a balmy sea breeze at the Bay this summer. Check out the Openair Cinemas website for all the details and grab tickets for your favourite flick.
