An extraordinary evening of contemporary world music

World Music Cafe: New Generation is shaping up to be one of Brisbane's most exciting live music events!

Taking place on Saturday 22nd April, 2017 at BEMAC (Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre), this special evening of contemporary world music will showcase a new generation of contemporary Brisbane musicians of Asian heritage.

Commening at 7.00pm, this two-hour live music event will feature special performances by Brisbane-based, Malaysian-born singer, songwriter and producer May Lyn, Brisbane's emerging songbird Noralyn and the founding member of Brisbane's gypsy-infused caravan The Mouldy Lovers and 2017 Queensland Music Awards finalist, Matt Hsu.

May Lyn is known for her distinct vocals and unique sonic aesthetic, which has been dubbed Atmospheric Future R&B. With thought-provoking lyricism and fresh ingenuity, May Lyn crafts a delicate balance of minimal hip hop beats, mixed with atmospheric textures and ethereal vocals.

Noralyn will have audiences under her spell with her evocative lyrics and melodious hooks. With comparisons to Tori Amos and Kate Bush, Noralyn's immersive melodies are brought to life by an emotive voice and distinct piano-driven sound that reveals hints of classical influence among pop sensibilities.

Matt Hsu rounds out the New Generation line-up with his multi-layered compositions which sound like they could belong to the soundtrack of an obscure international arthouse film featuring a heist, Tibetan monks, sentient plants, and animated by Japanese Studio Ghibli.

Matt learns, plays and records all instruments himself with an inventory that includes a trumpet, accordion, clarinet, kitchen utensils, trombone, flugelhorn, euphonium, mbira, marimba, double bass, shakuhachi, tin whistle, furulya, banjo and found objects.

Come and be blown away by Brisbane's best emerging musical talents at BEMAC's first World Music Café of 2017.

Tickets are now on sale through Eventbrite and priced $18 Full Price and $15 Concession. Early bookings are advised as places are limited.
