I love to dance, and also try new dance styles, so I was intrigued to try out my recent group discount voucher for a belly dancing class with Yvonne Carroll, a warm, encouraging teacher and an advocate of the fine art of Egyptian Belly Dance.
Her Subiaco classes are held at the Juan Rando Dance Academy Studios in Churchill Avenue and though small, it was a lot of fun with friendly classmates – one even lent me her spare hip belt, laden with noisily musical gold coins and light-catching beads, which I have to say, made all the hippy, hippy shake moves even more enjoyable to try.
A gentle, low-impact yet weight-bearing exercise, belly dancing is nonetheless an inspired way to build bone and muscular strength (a bit of an osteoporosis fighter), as many of the moves involve isolations which work on your core muscles, and undulations which lengthen and can decompress your spinal column.
The class I attended was working on their end of year performances, but Yvonne welcomes drop-ins at both her Subiaco and Fremantle locations if you're interested in a taster, with the new semester scheduled to begin after Christmas.
As a performing artist, Yvonne can also be booked to provide an exotic and fascinating display of this beautiful and sensual dance, or for something different, group or private classes are also available – a fun idea for a hen's night maybe!
