I had been here once before for breakfast about a year ago, but on returning to Coolangatta recently, apart from its location, I couldn't remember much about it. Luckily for us we turned down the right street, and I am so glad I suggested to go back as the food was simply exceptional.

Bellakai is a modern restaurant and cafe located on marine parade, offering breakfast from 5am, lunch and dinner till late, although I believe they close earlier on Sundays. You can sit in the lovely indoor restaurant, on the terrace or pavement tables - all of which have ample shade and gorgeous views across the beach.

The menu is pretty comprehensive with lots of breakfast, lunch, share and taste plates, cakes, juices and smoothies, coffees, alcohol and dinner options, they also have BYO. You can see their breakfast menu here and lunch and dinner menu here - please note some specials may have changed.

We ordered food and drinks with the total bill coming to $75 for three adults - I have certainly paid more than that, where the quality and service was nowhere near as good.

We ordered off the lunch special menu a Caesar Salad ($17) which came with lots of crispy bacon and soft boiled egg, a Mexican bowl ($22) of spicy chicken, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, beans, corn and tortillas. I had the open chicken sandwich ($20) served on sourdough with Beetroot and onion salsa, salad, fried egg and chips. Yum.

The presentation was spot on, the service was amazing and the food was really impressive. The salad was crunchy and delicious - they also remembered her no egg request, it's amazing how many times minor adjustments are forgotten. My chicken sandwich was so tender and juicy and the relish, sourdough and salad combination was a melt-in-the-mouth treat. My partners Mexican chicken bowl looked like a work of art was just delicious - much to his annoyance when I went back for my third "research" spoonful.

Our waiter was attentive and friendly without being pushy - it's a fine line I find, and he got it just right. Our water was topped up throughout our meal and the soft drinks were served in large pint glass jugs - exactly what you need to cool down after a long walk on the beach, and as we head into summer.

It's located in a really good spot (just across the road from the famous Coolangatta Hotel) and suitable for all walks of life and wants and desires. There were families fresh from the beach, people having business coffee meetings, couples having cake and wine, and mates like us having lunch and chilling out after checking out the Coolangatta beach market.

Bellakai is translated as "beautiful food" and they certainly deliver on that. I am absolutely going to head back next time I visit Coolangatta, and I'll certainly be recommending it to friends and family. They also hold events there - it would make a great private party venue.
