If you live south of Adelaide, there is a restaurant you simply must try. Located in the high hills of Belair, lies an unexplored establishment of Indian cuisine, called . It may be a bit of a drive to get there (depending on where you live) but lovers of Indian cuisine and curries will be able to tantalise their tastebuds.

Make no mistake, Belair Bhavan is one of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to. They even have a finalist Award for Excellence from the Restaurant and Catering Association on their wall to prove it.

Owners James Davidson and Chandra Semwal run this restaurant very well. Together they make a formidable team. James, with his friendly personality runs the front of house, and can often be seen conversing with his customers. Chandra, who grew up in India, and has cooked all around the world, is responsible for the amazing dishes.

The food is very authentic and of the highest quality. For entrée, my partner and I had a non-veg sizzling platter. The meats were cooked in a tandoor oven, hence had a smokey tone, yet they still retained plenty of juice. Topped off with plenty of spices and herbs, the flavours are to be savoured. Their tandoori meat truly is to die for.

For mains, we shared a butter chicken curry and a duck tikka masala curry, both with rice. Any left over curry sauce was all but wiped up with some garlic naan bread.

Even though we were really full, we still managed to fit in dessert, and shared a traditional Indian sweet, called Gulab Jamun. These were Indian milk sponge balls, soaked in cardamon rose syrup, and served with vanilla ice cream. It was an ideal way for my sweet-tooth partner to finish dinner.

If it suits you, Belair Bhavan also offers takeaway meal deals. If you do decide on this, perhaps you can head on down to Windy Point lookout which is only a few minutes drive away, and gaze at the lights of Adelaide over a hearty Indian meal.
