The Joan Sutherland Theatre is under the second largest sail of the Opera House. Named after Dame Joan Sutherland , the great Australian soprano, it's the second largest venue with seats for more than 1500 guests. It also received the Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts at the UNESCO 2019 Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation held in Penang, Malaysia. Where better to go behind the scenes than at the prestigious Sydney Opera House. Bring your burning questions with you so you can have a meaningful Q&A conversation with an opera singer, a musician from the Opera Australia Orchestra, a conductor, a director, makeup artist, wig-knotter, dresser and other talented people essential to every performance who'll be on hand to answer your questions. Ask them anything!

What goes into staging an opera? What does a costume feel like to wear? How are the sets and props made? How do wigs fit over your own hair? How does a makeup artist turn an ordinary Sydneysider into an extraordinary character? What causes the set and lighting to change at precisely the right moment? All these will be revealed, hence make the most of it by asking questions outside what you're already going to be privy to, and more, at this free event.

You might just find yourself making your singing debut at the Sydney Opera House. In the theatre, you'll learn to sing an opera chorus and learn what a stage manager does. You'll hear his instructions and watch how that plays out on stage. In the foyers, you can try on an opera costume, look at costumes, wigs, set models, props and scores up close, watch elaborate stage make-up applied step-by-step and watch one of the professional wig-knotters create a handmade wig. What an exciting event for theatre and opera lovers! RUN! Don't fall! The beloved Sydney Opera House is undergoing a decade of renewal; the biggest upgrade in Opera House history. Find out more HERE how more than $275 million of works are transforming this world-famous icon for the 21st century.
