The
Riverside Theatre at Parramatta has partnered with the
Whitlam Institute and
Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House to present 'Behind the Lines' a travelling exhibition that captures the 2018 political year from the viewpoint of some of Australia's best cartoonists.
If you can't believe the antics of Australia's major parties and politicians in 2018 and you are a fan of political satire, you'll love the razor-sharp wit of cartoonists capturing the agendas and missteps of our rulers in the 'Behind The Lines' exhibition.
A celebration of democracy, freedom of speech and the chronicling of the strange political landscape this past year. The 2018 exhibition is inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland, with the central theme being 'Curiouser and Curiouser', reflecting the bizarre and unsettling year that 2018 was.
Institute Director Leanne Smith reflects on the importance of the exhibition and these cartoons in our processing of the political landscape, quoting James Traub in saying "
Irony is the secret to saving democracy."
