Learn the art of Book-binding with this beginner's class at Annerley Community Hub. You will be hand-binding a blank journal with an expert teacher and craftsperson, Lu Douglas.
The aim of this course is to familiarise you with the necessary knowledge and skills to start you on a journey to make your own books. The art of book binding is ancient and has many incarnations. This particular technique will get your started with the basics which you can add to with other classes and courses.
This class takes good hand/eye coordination as you are cutting and folding paper to make the pages or leaves. Teenage children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult and able to use a Stanley knife safely.
You will learn paper grain, how to hand tear and fold their paper, configure sewing stations and sewing gauges, bind the book through the spine and stitch with 10/12ply waxed linen thread for durability.
Annerley Community Hub is a non-profit organisation which assists the most vulnerable members of the community. The classes are held to raise funds for the centre and ensure the longevity of this vital service.
