Sew Make Create is a cute little shop in the suburb of Chippendale, offering various creative classes/workshops from sewing to painting for kids and adults. It also sells a collection of Australian handmade products along with sewing and craft accessories.
Having been wanting to learn the proper way of sewing rather than trial and error, the Introduction to Sewing Beginner Course is perfect for my needs. This is a five-hour course conducted in two classes for 2.5 hours each week. At the end of the course, you should be able to sew a cushion cover!
[SECTION]Week 1 - Basics of sewing machine and sewing techniques[/SECTION]
I arrived early on my first class and was greeted by the bubbly and cheerful owner of Sew Make Create, Melissa Tan-Lu who is also the instructor of the class.
While waiting for the rest to arrive, I had a little tour of the premise. Though it's small, the shop is very well organized and brightly lit. There is a shared workspace, sewing area, display area, and even a big calendar blackboard of class schedules.
The section displaying Australian handmade products are for sale and all of them are well-made. Everything is just colourful, pretty and cute!
Once the others arrived for the class, Melissa distributed the starter pack to everyone. The pack includes sewing necessities such as a pair of fabric scissors, thread clippers, dress pins, tape measure, needles and many more.
We got started with an introduction to sewing machine, learning the various features of the machine and the process of setting it up. Melissa also explained the difference of various stitches and shared with us on how to solve common sewing problems. Since the class size is kept to a maximum of four people, it gives an interactive learning environment and opportunities to ask questions at any point in time.
The goal for the first class is getting comfortable with sewing machine, learning the techniques of making button holes, finishing raw edges and stitching a hem. This will prepare us for our next class in Week 2 to make a cushion cover!
Though it was a comprehensive 2.5 hours, I guessed everyone left feeling happy and looking forward to the next class
[SECTION]Week 2 - Sewing Cushion Cover[/SECTION]
Week 2 is all about applying what we've learned in Week 1 into making cushion cover. We were required to bring our choice of fabric and buttons for this project. Melissa taught us the process of preparing and cutting the fabric by drawing examples from various types of fabric we've brought to class. Different fabric has different characteristics, hence it's important to prepare and cut them accordingly.
Everyone was busy cutting, ironing, pinning, sewing and eager to complete the project, including the guy who was in my class (yes, men can sew too!). In fact, his sewing is very neat!
At the end of the 2.5 hours session, I successfully completed my first cushion cover! It's now placed on my couch at home and sometimes my desk chair.
I would definitely recommend this course for anyone interested to get started in sewing. Though the course only cover stitching in straight lines, it's definitely a good start to sew simple things. Quoting Melissa, "You will be amazed by how many wonderful things you can make just by sewing straight lines"
If you are interested, do check out the courses in
Sew Make Create website. It has great sewing facilities and there's even light snacks prepared each week in case you're hungry. Melissa is always helpful and willing to teach. Her friendly nature and humble approach makes the learning atmosphere very relaxing and fun.
