Beetoota-isms is a lexicon of Aussie slang as used in the satirical news website The Betoota Advocate , created in 2014 by Archer Hamilton and Charles Single. You might have seen articles from the site popping up on social media to skewer the political target of the day. If you enjoy this style of humour you'll probably like this book too. Personally I had a few chuckles while asking my significant other to guess the meaning of some of the terms. It might be handy for new Aussie citizens after they've finished memorising Bradman's batting average.

It contains a section on terms relating to the global pandemic, including a few gems such as 'AstroZucchini', and 'Pangolin's Kiss', which the site's writers use to avoid being shadow banned by over zealous social media algorithms trying to get rid of anti-vaxxers. Then there are nicknames for politicians, such as Marilyn Hanson (Pauline Hanson), Paid Leave Porter (Christian Porter) and Tasmanian Toiga (Jacqui Lambie) and celebrities like the Christmas Cake (Delta Goodrem) and the Duchess of Dalby (Margot Robbie). Other topics covered include cultural archetypes, fashion trends, food, sport, place names and rhyming slang.

Beetoota-isms is a fun book of dry, Aussie humour that would make a great Christmas gift for fans of the Beetoota Advocate or anyone who is just interested in Australian slang.
