Beethoven and Beyond: Piano Concerto No. 4 and more

The older Beethoven grew, the more imaginative he became. His Piano Concerto No. 4 is the most gentle and poetic of all his concertos and offers one of his more radical ideas: to begin with the unaccompanied piano. It was a move without precedent and is the only one of the five concertos in which the piano begins alone.

Haydn's Drumroll Symphony (reviewed here ) and one of Schoenberg's truly romantic works, Transfigured Night, complete the program, part of the MSO's Beethoven Festival. Conducted by Douglas Boyd and featuring virtuoso Paul Lewis on the piano, this performance is sure to leave you with a warm glow on a cold-snap Melbourne night.
