4 Pines Brewery and the Builders Arms Hotel have a special partnership. And so, of course, when 4 Pines approached chef Andrew McConnell about creating a special brew for the Good Beer Week, it only seemed fitting that his inspiration would come from the Builders Arms menu. Thus, 4 Pines Gentleman's Ale was created.
This special brew, showcased at Beer Mimics Food, held on May 22nd, 2013 at the Builders Arms Hotel, was inspired by Gentleman's Relish, which is a special accompaniment to the steaks served at the restaurant.
The relish is a mix of orange zest, prunes, brown sugar, mustard, allspice, and anchovy, and you note hints of this exotic combination in the rich yet subtle flavour of the brew, with its spicy undertones. And even though the relish is served with steaks, this did not limit the food pairings of the ale it inspired; I had it with the crispy pork and prawns, and they complemented each other perfectly. Or, just simply enjoy this fine brew at the bar, in the company of great friends, surrounded by the casual elegance of this bar/bistro's interior.
Builders Arms will be pouring Gentleman's Ale all throughout Good Beer Week, which runs until May 26, Sunday. But here's hoping that this excellent beer will find a more permanent place in the Builders Arms tap selection.
