The traditional trio of entertainment are wine, women and song. So it follows that a woman singing about wine must be the greatest form of entertainment known.

Certainly Christa Hughes is in no position to argue that proposition. The delectable Ms Hughes is a singer and songwriter of quality with a very wide range. She describes herself as 'Blues Belter, Vaudeville Vamp, Rock 'n' Roll Hell Cat, Cabaret Chanteuse, Burlesque Babe, Circus Run Away, Raucous Ring Mistress, Opera Dame…'

She is making a welcome return to Perth Downstairs at the Maj from the 11th to the 13th September in her show Beer Drinking Woman. Accompanied by pianist Leonie Wilson Ms Hughes runs through a vast repertoire of booze-related songs, including the eponymous Memphis Slim favourite.

Christa describes the show thus;" Beer Drinking Woman isn't a 'celebration' of alcohol, rather it just shows alcohol as it is. It can be joyous, it can be disastrous, it can enhance a good time, it can turn something bad into something evil. It can highlight and it can blur."
