If you've ever been to America or at least watched enough American TV shows, then you've probably, undoubtedly had a craving and desire to be able to experience their classic dining experience that involves a simply good burger and a delicious and creamy milkshake.
While we are still reeling from the recent restrictions imposed on account of the pandemic that through our hospitality scene into a state of turbulence, Beefcakes and Shakes in Grange quickly adapted to the changes and has been going strong in consistently delivering a damn good American dining feed. Opening up their store in November 2019, Beefcakes and Shakes run by Jamie Wimmer unashamedly delivers a quality burger meal that won't leave you feeling bloated, but will rather satisfy those hangry cravings in its most delicious and gastronomically-pleasing form.
I'm a true lover of food! Any chance I get, I'm eating out at my favourite places and always trying new food. I also love travelling, attending a good music festival, hanging with friends - the usual things - but experiencing different cultures is one of my favourite things.
So, what made Wimmer start up one of the most popular burger joints in the Western suburbs for foodies to enjoy a damn good burger?
I was working with a friend of mine (Stephen) from BurgerTec as I wanted to get a feel for the hospitality industry and my love for food ignited a passion within to open up my own shop. So, he gave me the opportunity to spend every day with him and experience first-hand what's involved in opening and running a store. After working long hours and learning a wealth of things about running a food-based business, we decided to open up Beefcakes & Shakes with his help. To this day, he continues to help me make sure that things are running smoothly - in fact, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't call him!
Filling the gap in the market for a space where customers could get treated to a classic American diner that served up burgers and shakes in its most prime forms, Beefcakes and Shakes was the product of Wimmer's love for travel (particularly in America) and his passion for recreating the vibe and feel of a mix of Shake Shack, In n Out, and potato buns with the smashed patty.
The menu may be small, but it is packed with enough (and essential!) flavour combinations that will have you running back week after week, just so you can get the full experience of a hearty good meal accompanied with a creamy milkshake on the side.
Walk into the burger joint and you'll be welcomed into a cozy and intimate little space that is adorned with a feature wall replicating the flag of the United States. Their booth-style seatings make for a brilliant little date spot for couples or small friends to gather and bond over a burger (or few). Offering a homey vibe to the space, customers are also invited to join in on game-playing via the PS4 that has been connected to the TV close to the booths with some really fun options of games to choose from (anyone love Crash Bandicoot? It's there!). While the booths offer a relaxed yet intimate setting, it also provides with just the right level of socialization, so if you bring a bigger group, you might as well take over the whole space, because it's the best way to catch up with friends and loved ones!
During our visit to the diner-style burger joint a few months back, we opted for the classic burger and the 'shroom burger, with a side of crinkle-cut fries and two milkshakes - the Oreo and the Glazed Donut.
The classic burger with its smashed patty is topped with American cheese, ketchup, mustard, red onion, and pickles. It may not be a theatrical dish with lots of extravagant ingredients, but it ticks the boxes around flavour, quality, and presentation. It's a simply good burger that hit the spot and satisfied a (very hungry) belly effortlessly. Meanwhile, the 'shroom burger with a panko crumbed mushroom patty is topped with American cheese, pickled red onion, dill mayo, and green oak lettuce. It is incredibly juicy and has a burst of delicious and feel-good tastes emanating with each bite. Served with crispy crinkle-cut fries on the side and a refreshing cool shake that has been whipped to perfection, you have yourselves a feast that will introduce you to a combination of flavours to thoroughly delight the taste buds.
In addition to their exciting menu options, Beefcakes and Shakes also celebrates a special edition menu with a burger of the month. Wimmer and his partner regularly whip up new recipes of burgers that are often constructed from their own foodie adventures. By experimenting with unique combinations of ingredients and presenting to their team a concoction, the burger is tweaked and once it's classified to be a 'winner' in all their books, it is added to the menu for a limited time. With the most recent favourite being the Waffinator and past hits including the Cheezus, the Mi Goreng Burger and the Krispy Kreme burger, you can be rest assured that the team is back this month with something equally juicy and out of this world with their May special - the El Dorito. Staying true to its name, the El Dorito comes packed with Dorito crumbed fried chicken, charred corn salsa, hot queso, guacamole, tomato slices, the signature Beefcake sauce, and finished off with a house-made jalapeņo popper. If you love Mexican cuisine, you won't want to miss this rendition.
The same applies to their shake of the month, which involves a whacky yet wonderful concoction of the most outrageous flavours to create something that will make you wish you had come up with the idea first! With the most recent alumnus being the well-known Caramilk shake and current popular superstars including the Cherry Ripe, the Oreo, and the Glazed Donut, it's no surprise that this month's special pays homage to one of the most loved forms of chocolate - marble chocolate - in the form of a Nuts About Marble shake that combines the silky smooth flavours of Nutella and Cadbury marble chocolate.

If you're after a wholesome feed and drink that won't break the bank or leave you feeling in a food coma after, then I would highly recommend Beefcakes and Shakes. Their attention to the little details and their tenacity to push themselves and their customers out of their comfort zone is admirable and I wholeheartedly think you should place your faith in their burgers and shakes, because they make unusual combos work to our heart's content in a monumental way. Beefcakes and Shakes isn't your usual burger joint - they provide a competitive and affordable point of difference with their signature and unique burgers and shakes and it really does (even if momentarily) transport you to an American diner paradise, where food lovers can rejoice and revel in the essence of a damn good burger with a damn good shake on the side! So go on forth and as Wimmer exclaims, "taste the difference"!
