Madman's Gully was the scene of a major gold strike in 1853, one of the reasons for the development of the town of Beechworth. It was also the site of the infamous Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum which opened in 1867, later becoming a hospital which closed in 1995.
The Lunatic Asylum is long gone but the festival site is still a working farm but free camping is allowed. Camping conditions are described as very basic, BYO everything except:
No Fires or gas cooking appliances No BYO alcohol
No glass containers of any kind No pets or any other animals No excessive noise on site.
If basic camping is not your thing remember Beechworth is at the centre of Victoria's north-east high country tourist precinct with an extensive range of excellent accommodation available. Check out the website www.booking.com/Beechworth for a great selection.
The Mayday Hills will ring out with some great music during January's Beechworth Music Festival.
Beechworth is 286 Kilometres northeast of Melbourne, just over a 3-hour drive via the M31 Hume Freeway to Wangaratta then the C315.
