This April, 4th, 5th & 6th, the Beechworth townsfolk are painting the Easter long weekend gold with the
Golden Horseshoes "Golden Age of Rock" Festival, and it's going to be huge.
The historical and picturesque township of Beechworth is a wonderful destination for a weekend stay, but if you like lots of activity and good music, this is the weekend to choose.
The
festival starts on Good Friday (3rd April) with the Walk of Witness from 11am, a retelling of the Easter Story. This event begins at Christ Church, corner Ford & Church Streets and concludes at St Andrews Uniting Church corner of Ford & Williams Streets.
While at the same time, the Beechworth Golden Putters
Golf Competition will be teeing off at noon, with proceeds being donated to the Good Friday Appeal.
Easter Saturday, the colourful foil wrapping will be peeled back and the beautiful town of Beechworth will unveil its
Easter Festival splendour.
Start your engines at 9am with the
Beechworth Easter Fun Run (or walk). The run sets off from the Beechworth Secondary College on Balaclava Road with 10km or 3km courses. Prizes to be won.
Prefer a slower pace? From 9am – 4pm the Beechworth Rotary
Market will be in full swing at the Queen Victorian Park in Sydney Road.
Ever been to a
Bottles Exhibition ? Must say, I haven't either. Well here's our chance. 9.30am – 3.30pm the North East Bottle Club & Collectables will be having their annual show, featuring rare items both on display and for sale. Entry to this fine exhibit is FREE.
The Beechworth cenotaph has recently been carefully restored. It will be unveiled in the Town Hall Gardens at 10.15am as part of the 100 years of ANZAC celebrations.
Now, this isn't called the
Beechworth Golden Horseshoes Festival for nothing. At 12 noon at the Roundabout on Ford & Camp Streets, the legend of Daniel Cameron and 'his horse shod with shoes of real gold' will be brought to life.
Real golden horseshoes will be on display all weekend.
However, the theme this year is "Golden Age of Rock" and rock they will – all over town. Street buskers and entertainers will be singing, miming, dancing and performing throughout the CBD.
Adjacent to the Camp Street Food Court, hear some great entertainment on the live music stage. Both local and Melbourne based artists will feature throughout the day.
There will also be performances on the Hibernian Hotel Playground Stage, corner Camp & Loch Street. See puppets and circus acts as well as musicians and dancers.
Whatever you're doing, be sure and return to Ford Street at 2pm for the Beechworth Bakery & Beechworth Honey
Grand Parade .
Fill in the rest of the day with the Show & Shine vintage car display, Captain Koala Show, and check out the CFA trucks.
But wait, there's more! From 5pm – 9pm the Night Market will spring up at The Old Priory, Priory Lane. Vintage and artisan market stalls with even more musical entertainment, local wines and marchetta-style food.
Then there's the Easter Carnival with rides galore, between Ford & High Streets, to get the adrenalin pumping.
And don't even think about sleeping in on Easter Sunday (5th April). There will be an Easter Dawn Service starting at 6.30am at The Rock, Sydney Road, followed by an easter egg hunt especially for kids at Mayday Hills from 10am.
On Easter Monday (6th April), visit the Wooragee Market between 10am and 2pm. There will be a jumping castle, plants, bric a brac, BBQ lunch and Devonshire tea.
Town tours – Echoes of History Guided Walking Tours will operate over the weekend. Book at the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre or call 1300 366 321.
And you can't leave Beechworth without looking inside the Ned Kelly Vault.
Beechworth, a town rich in history and carefully preserved buildings, is located approximately 3 hours north east of Melbourne off the Hume Freeway; 30 minutes from Wangaratta, Albury & Wodonga.
There are plenty of
accommodation options in Beechworth, so be sure and plan a weekend stay to make the most of this wonderful
Easter Festival.
