Opening night for Beauty is Difficult began with a palpable hush over the audience as the curtain opened, and finished with rousing applause and appreciation for the writers, actors and story told.

At first, the landscape of Beauty is Difficult looks like a large runway. We are left to contemplate if perhaps we are looking upon the plains of Purgatory or the stage of a runway fashion show.

Four beautiful women, as lost for clues as the audience, arrive in the strange setting. Greeted by a woman draped in mystery a masquerade ball begins.

What follows is a collision of memories, stories and characters. Each woman experiences a dance with life and death leading toward a final and brutal denouncement.

Emma Bovary, Hedda Gabler, Anna Karenina, Phedre and Mrs Danvers (created by Tolstoy, Ibsen, Racine, Flaubert, du Maurier) are the pulse of this play, leading the audience through the tumultuous exploration of their own archetypal beauty, what beauty means and what it costs to be beautiful.

Director and designer Michael Beh brings the movement and dialogue of the story together with a result of absolute power and precision acting that tells a clear story with the subtle artistry reminiscent of a lucid, dream-like state.

The heartBeast ensemble perform this play mostly in English with accented scenes acted partly in French and feature Adrienne Costello, Karen Dinsdale, Jason Ward Kennedy, Hamish Nicholson, Anna O'Hara, Steven Pearton, Sherri Smith and Judith Turnbull.

For a unique experience and something a bit different, don't miss this display of powerful storytelling, showing from July 6th to 28th at Trinity Hall in Fortitude Valley. Tickets can be purchased through qtix.com.
