Funky and Fun ways to find a bargain
You might already know about the Funky Op Shop at Maroochydore, though I've only just discovered it and the organisation it raises funds for, Beautiful You Cancer Charity.
Funky Op Shop moved about eight weeks ago from its Maroochydore venue, now operating from bigger premises, just off Maud Street in the estate at 1/7 Norval Court. You can't miss the pink flags adorning the front of the building.
There is so much about Beautiful You, from the support this organisation gives cancer sufferers, the pamper days, workshops and retreats, the lovely Funky Op Shop, and the organisation's founder Debbie Clayton's ultimate mission, to raise enough funds to create a permanent retreat where those enduring their own personal battle with cancer can take time out from the world, far too much to cram into one article. If you find you want to read more feel free to like and comment, and we'll keep letting you know the wonderful work of Beautiful You in so many ways.
Not only is this an op shop full of funky fashion, accessories, bric-a-brac and furniture, it's a place you feel your senses come alive, you can't help but be touched by the mission to help those suffering from cancer.
Like so many of you, I had only recently witnessed a close friend battle her cancer, she remained so strong and beautiful to the last, handling every challenge she faced with dignity, and a smile, determined to leave only beautiful memories for everyone in her life. I knew she would have loved Funky Op Shop, and only wish she was here so I could share it with her.
Caring, sharing and smiling Maxine and the team make you feel beautiful from the moment you arrive
Maxine explained the aim of Beautiful You is to provide practical, financial or emotional support for women suffering cancer. "We aim to help families lead a normal life and try to make a difference no matter how small, so we host fun mornings for women each month with a theme of Beautiful You, ranging from beauty treatments to massage and other activities."
I got comfortable in Funky Op Shop's retro coffee lounge, sipping my aromatic coffee, and nibbled a toasted raisin bun, simply absorbing the energy around me, watching visitors to the Funky Op Shop wander, finding little treasures in every area.
The décor is stylish, themed in pinks and whites, with hearts everywhere, a focal point being the ring of remembrance hanging from the ceiling. Look closely and you will find satin hearts embroidered with the names of those beautiful women who have lost their private battle, a reminder of the sadness, a constant and poignant reminder of why Beautiful You exists.
Stock changes almost daily with donations arriving from everywhere
Much as I love an op shop, rarely have I seen one set up with such style and pizazz, with artistic touches everywhere the eye can see. Debbie, Maxine and the team who keep the shop open, have done a wonderful job creating this space, a funky op shop with a story to see in every corner.
If you are looking for a great little place to find that special outfit, beautiful linen, something funky, practical or beautiful, or simply a cute little item to finish a corner at home, you need explore Beautiful You Funky Op Shop. Its open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturdays 9am to 1pm.
Tucked into the corner of Norval Court where the old post office once was, it's worth finding, there's also an upbeat art gallery and décor shop nearby that's worth a look.
The Funky Op Shop is literally full to the brim of all sorts of delightful things, well priced too. And the shop is always looking for more stocks to keep up with sales, so feel free to take donations in, knowing all the funds raised are going to help open a cancer retreat locally on the Sunshine Coast.
What this little organisation has achieved in just a few short years is truly inspiring. Maxine herself a survivor speaks gently and quietly about the other work that happens through Funky Op Shop and Beautiful You.
If only they had a benefactor, one to miraculously appear with the parcel of land they need to develop the retreat. Somewhere peaceful, surrounded by nature, with room for women to visit, take time out simply to reflect, rest and refresh from the battles they face. Perhaps one day someone in a position to help turn the dream retreat into a reality will happen along, in the meantime Beautiful You continues to work tirelessly fundraising towards the goal.
So visit Funky Op Shop, even if you aren't looking to buy, absorb the delightful atmosphere, so busy with cuteness, though calming, I guarantee you will be touched by Beautiful You. If you can't physically visit the store, there's also an online shop full of treasures and trinkets, so simply click on the links and have a look, check out the pages online and discover the wonderful work of Beautiful You.
