I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.

The multi award-winning 2013 Broadway musical Beautiful premiered in Sydney on September 17. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster. This video from the Broadway production will give you a taste of what to expect.

The show runs for about 155 minutes Including a 20 minute interval and is jam packed of iconic songs. Carole King is an incredibly talented musician who wrote number one songs for artists such as The Monkees, The Drifters, Aretha Franklin and the Shirelles in collaboration with her lyricist husband Gerry Goffin. They wrote over 20 hit songs and were in a friendly rivalry with the song writing duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who penned numbers such as You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling. This musical charts the rise of Carole King's star via the soundtrack of the sixties and early seventies. It is both a joyful and at times painful celebration of her life and music.

The cast of 24 has been well chosen and each of them appears to be having a great time. Apart from the stunning costumes and great vocals there are some very funny one liners. Esther Hannaford is the lead and plays the role with a humble vulnerability, you can see Carole is most comfortable when making music. Amy Lehpamer has a terrific voice and is perfect as the sassy strong minded Cynthia Weil.

At times I was torn by the desire to get up and dance whilst singing out loud but I wanted to hear the performances and not spoil it for the other patrons. Sanity prevailed as I danced in my seat whilst singing to myself. Get along to Beautiful for a fun night that will have you digging out your old albums.

Watch out for Neil Sedaka and the Drifters
