South Australia is spoiled for choice with a wealth of historic homes to explore. From former stately homes to faux castles, the offerings really are quite impressive. One of these homes of great grandeur and setting is the state heritage listed Beaumont House, located at 631 Glynburn Road, Beaumont.

Sometimes (and originally) known as Claremont, Beaumont House is a Romanesque-classical brick residence originally constructed for Augustus Short. Bishop Short was the first Anglican bishop of Adelaide and the founder of St Peter's Cathedral and College.

Designed and built between 1849 and 1851, the house was originally a five-bedroom residence but was expanded extensively between 1907 and 1911 leading to the magnificent "Mediterranean" aspect we see today.

From 1857 to 1906 the house was owned by prominent politician, horticulturist and pioneer of olive oil and wine production, Sir Samuel Davenport with his wife Margaret Cleland.

The original 29 acres of gardens which included 1400 trees is now represented by an olive grove planted behind the house in the 1860's and another below, located off Devereaux Road. The extensive gardens contain a myriad of roses, flowers and original palms and trees, all overlooking Adelaide city.

Beaumont House is the commencing and finishing location for WalkingSA's City of Burnside Historic Walking Trail ; a 2.5 km (1.5 hour) circuit.

Now managed by the National Trust of Australia, Beaumont House is open for viewing on the first Sunday of each month from 2 pm to 4.30 pm. Entry is $10 per person and includes afternoon tea.

A visitor's car park provides easy parking or parking is usually available on the street nearby. Public transport is also available from many areas of Adelaide with a number of bus stops located at a short distance.
