Beach paradise for dogs and people
Beaumaris Mentone beach coastal walk
Coastal walk, view towards Beaumaris

Now that the weather has that spring feel in the air, why not do some coastal walking? If you have a dog with you then even better as at the end of your beach walk from Beaumaris to Mentone there is a fabulous 24 hour, 12 months of the year dog beach - a rare find on a Melbourne beach.

The walk is about 3,5 km from the Beaumaris Concourse to which you can get a connecting bus from Sandringham Station if taking public transport Sandringham line and then the 600 or 923 bus to towards Southland). There are a number of cafes in Beaumaris where you can get a coffee, breakfast or lunch. Most have outdoor seating, so no worries about leaving your dog outside without you.

Then it's a quick 500-metre walk to the coastal path which will take you to Mentone.

The sandy path takes you through native coastal vegetation with frequent views of the water, the cliffs and the bird life. There are a couple of nooks perched on the cliffs with seats ready for you to rest, if need be, or just take in the splendid view. You may see honey eaters camouflaged in the trees or magpies singing to you as you continue along the path. You may even see a pelican flying overhead before landing elegantly on the water.

Once you reach Mentone, there is a slight decline leading to the beach, a long sandy strip facing the Mornington Peninsula and Arthur's Seat. Once on the sand, your dog can run free to its heart's content - just make sure you pick up after it. There will be other dogs to play with for sure and shallow waters to run in.

If you don't have a dog and would like a refreshing swim, the second part of the beach is for swimmers and in summer lifesavers and flags ensure safety in the water.
Mentone Beach, paradise for people and dogs!

If feeling energetic, you could walk all the way to Mordialloc (another 3 km) and take the train from there back to the city. Or you could walk to Mentone or Parkdale and visit one of the cafes there before heading back home on the Frankston line

Whatever you do, wear comfortable shoes, take some water and a camera for all those photos - you never know you may even see a whale in Port Phillip Bay.

Your Comment
Spring is the perfect time of year for coastal walks. I"m not a swimmer but I love walking along the beach looking at the views, watching the birds and seeing what has washed up on shore.
