Frankston might not be a city you would expect to celebrate the Alice Springs Beanie Festival held in the country's heart each winter, but Melbourne's southern seaside suburb will indeed host a range of knitted activities to celebrate the 19th annual beanie event.

The Alice Springs Beanie Festival is a community-led festival that began in 1997 with a 'beanie party', organised by Adi Dunlop. What started out as a small festival run by a group of local friends, soon grew into a large event involving Aboriginal women in remote communities crocheting beanies whilst sharing their skills and culture with non-Aboriginal artists and locals. The one-of-a-kind event promotes handmade textile art but also develops ties with local Aboriginal organisations.

Both Frankston Arts Centre and Frankston Library are in on the woolly hat celebrations, with themed activities based on the mini touring exhibition of the eccentric colourful beanies that will be seen in this year's Alice Springs Beanie Festival.

Beanie Exhibition on Tour

The Beanie Exhibition will be on display at Frankston Library, Playne St between Saturday 12 July to Thursday 16 July, 2015.

The story follows Nessa, a white woman from Sydney, that flees a city life for new adventures in Alice Springs. She meets a black women named Tilly, crocheting a beanie, and the two become friends whilst weaving beanies together for the Beanie Festival, and share their life
secrets, struggles and successes, to discover they are not so different at all.
