The Great Ocean road is wonderful piece of Victoria that stretches almost 250kms from Torquay to Warrnambool. With such a huge amount of coast to choose from, how are you supposed to know where the best beaches are?

Never fear, a local is here.

Barwon Heads: Located on the Melbourne end of the Great Ocean Road, Barwon heads is a busy little town with plenty of shops, cafes and holiday places to choose from, as well as a few great beaches. The Barwon river runs into the ocean at this point and the beach surrounding the river mouth is the perfect place for a family day at the beach. It is very child friendly as the river provides a safe place for them to swim.

Lorne: Lorne is a holiday maker metropolis and no matter what time of year you visit, there is always plenty to do and see in this coastal town. The main beach in Lorne, located just off the main street, is family friendly, as well as having a decent swell for surfers from time to time.

Kennet River: A locals favourite, Kennet River is a quiet town located between Lorne and Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road. This beach is much quieter than those previously mentioned, although it can be a bit rough and is better suited to experienced swimmers/surfers, rather than families.

Port Campbell: Located about half way around the Great Ocean Road, Port Campbell is best known for being the gateway to the 12 Apostles. Despite the reputation this stretch of coast has for being rough, Port Campbell has a gorgeous little bay which is protected for the treacherous waves outside. This makes it a very child friendly beach and the perfect location for a family holiday.

Peterborough: Peterborough is my all time favourite beach. Located just a short drive from Port Campbell, this little gem remains reasonably untouched even during the peak tourist season. While the bay is less protected from the wilderness of the Ship Wreck Coast than Port Campbell, the main beach does have a river mouth which is safe for kids to swim in.

Next time you visited the Great Ocean Road, try these beautiful beaches on for size, you won't be disappointed.
