Carving intricate and beautiful sandalas with just a stick

After returning to Australia, Sue Norman began doodling in the sand and was soon creating symmetrical beach mandalas with a stick. The "sandalas", as she calls them, have since been enjoyed by many who happen to be walking pass. Crowds would regularly gather to watch the carving process.

In addition to creating these beach mandalas for herself, Sue also creates them by commission. Special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, weddings and baby showers can be catered for. The works of art would be different and each will have its own feel. Sue is happy to guide you or your group in carving specific beach mandalas too if you'd like to get your hands dirty.

I had the privilege of witnessing Sue create a National Park City mandala on Brighton beach just north of the jetty about two months ago. The artwork was indeed intricate and beautiful. Watching from start to finish, I found it really amazing that pretty much no measuring tools were used in the process.

The beach mandalas are free for all to view. Do head to Sue's Facebook page to follow her work and see what she is up to. Sue can also be contacted via email at

Now that is something different. Sue must be a quick drawer or the tides are slow. Great article.
