Originally, it was decided to hold the event as a biennial run for pre-1950 vehicles from "The Bay" as Glenelg is fondly named, to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. By 1990, interest had increased and Australia-wide recognition was secured by winning the National Tourism Award for the best special event stage in Australia. Due to the number of interstate and country South Australians now entering the event, it was decided in 1986 to introduce a range of social activities in conjunction with the run so the whole family could be involved in the festivities.
Australia is now recognised internationally as having the largest storehouses of historic vehicles in the world, along with South Australia having the largest per capita rate of ownership in the nation. South Australia is also fortunate to have the National Motor Museum situated in the Adelaide Hills with along with a well-established restoration regime, which has fuelled enthusiasm in the preservation of historic vehicles in the State.
In 2003, the Bay to Birdwood Run Committee introduced another section in the event for vehicles manufactured between 1956 and 1981. This broadens the scope allowing other motor fans to enter. The event was called Bay to Birdwood Classic.
On Sunday 30th September 2018 hundreds of cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles, which were manufactured before 31 December 1959 will parade the streets of Adelaide. The event will commence for an early rise at 6.00am at the Barratt Reserve, West Beach Parks. Breakfast will be available from local vendors while you have the opportunity to chat with owners. At 8.30am the vehicles are waved off and their journey to the Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills begins. Entry is free for onlookers.
If you would like to enter your vehicle the cost is $70.00 for motorcycles and $84.00 for other vehicles. Download the entry form here. Once the form is completed, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or mail to the National Motor Museum, Shannon Street, Birdwood, SA 5234.
