Vintage vehicles start adventure run to Birdwood
The Bay to Birdwood Run is a longest and largest continually held motoring event for veteran, classic and vintage vehicles held anywhere in the World. It first ran in 1980, when SAS Channel Ten, the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs and the National Motor Museum were invited to celebrate the first licence issued in South Australia. This licence was given to Dr. William a Hargreaves in 1906.

Originally, it was decided to hold the event as a biennial run for pre-1950 vehicles from "The Bay" as Glenelg is fondly named, to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. By 1990, interest had increased and Australia-wide recognition was secured by winning the National Tourism Award for the best special event stage in Australia. Due to the number of interstate and country South Australians now entering the event, it was decided in 1986 to introduce a range of social activities in conjunction with the run so the whole family could be involved in the festivities.

Australia is now recognised internationally as having the largest storehouses of historic vehicles in the world, along with South Australia having the largest per capita rate of ownership in the nation. South Australia is also fortunate to have the National Motor Museum situated in the Adelaide Hills with along with a well-established restoration regime, which has fuelled enthusiasm in the preservation of historic vehicles in the State.

In 2003, the Bay to Birdwood Run Committee introduced another section in the event for vehicles manufactured between 1956 and 1981. This broadens the scope allowing other motor fans to enter. The event was called Bay to Birdwood Classic.
