Nestled in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Batlow is famous for its apples and where there are apples, there is also cider. Batlow celebrates this beautiful beverage at its CiderFest, held annually in May.
Set among blazing autumn trees in crisp mountain air, you can hear the fizz and feel the buzz as you sample some of the best boutique ciders (both local and from across the country), local craft brews and cold climate wines. Some of the participating companies are Batlow Cider Co, Batlow Road Cider,The Apple Thief, Crafty Cider, 3 Sons Cider, Darkes Cider, Lost Pippin, Small Acre, Tumut River Brewing Co, Borambola Wines,Vinbar, Eunonyhareenyha Wines and Pretty Parrot Distilling. And while the cider is clearly the star of the show, you won't go hungry with plenty of food on offer - think southern style BBQ, woodfire pizzas, hot dogs, kebabs, fried potatoes and Thai.
This is a family-friendly event so while you enjoy the cider, there's also plenty to keep everyone entertained. You'll find buskers, street theatre, music including folk, rock and pipe bands, acrobatic displays, indigenous art workshops, rides for the kids and exclusive orchard tours.
If you enjoy the cider a bit too much on the day, fear not, there will also be a recovery BBQ breakfast on Sunday morning to help you on your way. If you plan to attend, keep in mind tickets are limited and you can book yours here.
If you need somewhere to stay, Batlow has limited options and you'll need to book ahead but nearby Tumut has plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets. And because cider is the star attraction, you don't want to worry about driving so you can take the Festival Bus instead - available from Tumut to Batlow and return. Once you've booked, all that's left to do is say cheers to a great weekend!
