Welcome to the Bathhouse at Ground – a new offering on the Gold Coast self-care scene. Located at the Ecovillage in the beautiful Currumbin Valley, this gem of a place is part of a collective of local businesses "with strong environmental and social values, offering a local, organic and natural approach to living". Here you'll find not only the Bathhouse but also Pasture & Co Café , Ground Grocer and Healing Ground and The Little Store, all situated in and around a 100-year-old farmhouse.

The venue for the Bathhouse is what sets it apart from other local spas. Stepping outside the farmhouse and into the lush outdoor space, my daughter and I immediately felt the relaxing effect, as we looked up at the magnificent fig tree and time miraculously slowed down. The tree canopy protects the range of hot tubs, spas, plunge pools and saunas nestled below it.

We began our visit with a hot shower located within an old rainwater tank. The rustic style with old sleepers, large rose showerheads and beautifully smelling cedarwood shower gel, fitted in perfectly with the ambiance the area creates.

The only decision required was what to indulge in first. We settled on the traditional hot tub made from Western Red Cedar, which was gently steaming in the rays of the afternoon sun. An audible sigh escaped from our lips as the heat of the water surrounded us.

After our deep water immersion, we felt brave enough to hop into the mineral enriched plunge pool, which made our limbs tingle with the contrast in temperature. It was cold but set us up for the hydrotherapy spa bath, sinking happily into its heat and bubbles, positioning ourselves to enjoy the therapeutic effect of the jets on our backs. Leaning back, looking up under the spreading branches and large leaves of the fig tree was wonderfully relaxing and we lingered there for some time.

Many spas play birdsong within their facility. At Ground, it occurs naturally, in an outdoor space that invites calm.

Curiosity about the sauna house finally drew us out. We braved the mineral cold plunge pool again on the way, before entering the wood-fired hot stone sauna. Its shape was unusual - was it hexagonal, I can't actually remember, but when we stepped inside the double door and lay down on the raised wooden floor, it felt like climbing into the womb - darkened and filled with a delicious warmth that embraced us and soothed us into further relaxation. I'd loved to have stayed longer but as happens in saunas - the heat that lured you in, also sends you back out.

Enjoying the variety, we circulated around all the spa offerings. We now understood the significance of the comment we overheard, passing between two ladies who left as we arrived: "Oh dear – we have to go back into the real world now". We were in no rush for our session to end either.

If you are looking for somewhere to recuperate after illness or are under stress, this is a place you need to know about. For anyone else, build a visit here into your schedule and you will appreciate the preventative health benefit potential it has for both your body and your mind. You can book wellness treatments too, from a range of massage, beauty and acupuncture natural therapists. Combining one of the treatment offerings with a bathhouse session would be wonderful.

Our afternoon session saw the café closing just as we stepped out, which was unfortunate, as the allergy-friendly, vegan, vegetarian, paleo, omnivore and gluten-free options sounded enticing and to be honest we would have been happy for any excuse to delay our departure just that little bit longer. When you visit, don't plan anywhere you need to rush off to afterwards. Just enjoy and let the relaxed, unhurried feeling float home with you. If there was ever a need to press a life Emergency Stop button, here would be the perfect place. Even one of the resident kangaroos we passed on our way out was relaxed – lying chilled on the grass. Must be something in the air or the water…
