The last stop on our Sunday cruise on June 1st, 2014, was the Batesford Hotel. We drove across the hills (on sealed roads and gravel roads) from the Mount Moriac Hotel to the Midland Highway. We stopped in at the Batesford for a pot of beer. Then we headed home to Geelong. All in all, it was a lovely way to spend a wet, rainy day in Geelong.

Batesford is a small township just outside Geelong. It is mostly a farming community with dairy farms, hydroponic nurseries, The Batesford Roadhouse and other small businesses. Batesford is about 10 kilometres outside Geelong, on the Midland Highway and about 67 kilometres south west of Melbourne.

Batesford Hotel, Batesford

Att the bottom of the Batesford Hill is the Batesford Hotel. It has undergone a few changes, including name changes, owners and renovations.

The Batesford Pub has been known as The Dog Rocks Hotel and The Derwent Hotel. The current owners have changed the name to the Batesford Hotel. They have done some great renovations and there has been a menu change.

The Moorabool River meanders past the back of the Batesford Hotel, and the old, original bluestone bridge is still there. The Batesford Hotel, set on land beside the Moorabool River, is a lovely place to enjoy great food, local Geelong wines and a large selection of beer.

The offers the Moorabool Room as a venue to hire for functions including Wedding Ceremonies, Wedding Receptions, Engagements, Birthdays, Anniversaries and conferences.

For more information about venue hire, or the menu at The Batesford Hotel, you can click on their website or phone them. Details below:

About Batesford

Batesford is named after Alfred and John Bates who settled here in 1837 at a place where the river could be forded. The township was surveyed in 1854 and was originally named Hopeton after George Hope whose land formed a part of the township.

A lovely feature of Batesford is the bluestone bridge which dates from 1859. The old bluestone bridge forms part of the service road past the (formerly the Derwent or Dog Rocks Hotel). The bluestone bridge and the are both on the Register of the National Estate.

Close to Batesford is The Dog Rocks reserve. Drive past the Batesford Hotel, turn left into Dog Rocks Road and you will find the large granite outcrop that is part of Dog Rocks. Dog Rocks is named after wild dogs that used to live among the rocks. Indigenous Australians believe that the Dog Rocks are haunted.

The Sanctuary - the Dogs Rocks Flauna and Flora Sanctuary - is found adjacent to the Dog Rocks outcrop in west Batesford. The Dog Rocks themselves are an outcrop of Devonian granite (similar to the You Yangs).

The open eucalyptus woodland is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Rare local native vegetation can be found. The Sanctuary is recognised for its bird life and provides a protected haven and habitat for them. It also contains a variety of mammals and reptiles.

On Sunday June 1st, my friend and I went on a pub crawl, pub cruise, on a wet and rainy day. We went to Texas Hamburger and Pizza House, Barwon Heads Hotel and The Mount Moriac Hotel, before ending our day at the Batesford Hotel. I hope you enjoyed following our outing as much as we enjoyed our day out!
