Bastille Day is a celebration of modern French culture in commemoration of the storming of the Bastille fortress in Paris in 1789, an event considered to be part of the birth of the modern French Republic. The Adelaide Central Market has long been a bastion of fine food, wine and fresh produce and it's the ideal place to celebrate French culture for the weekend.

Translated, the motto of the French Republic is 'Liberty, Equality, Fraternity', which also happens to neatly sum up the story of the Central Market. The market was originally created at three am on 23 January 1869 as a small but noisy procession of traders marched their way to Grote Street to begin a new city market, ending the monopoly of the overcrowded East End Market.

Thankfully they didn't have to burn anything down to get started, and in 2019 the Central Market reigns supreme as one of Australia's premier fresh produce markets.

Held over two days on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of July, Adelaide Central Market's Bastille Day celebrations will have something for everyone seeking a slice of the French 'joie de vivre'. There'll be live music, a pop up champagne bar, cooking demonstrations, crepes, ticketed dinners and events, and more!

Bicchiere Bar is an artisan mobile drinks service and they'll be bringing a pop up champagne bar to tingle the senses with a bit of fizz and French frivolity. Melange A Trois are joined by Louise Blackwell & the French Set on the Friday night to deliver the French music vibe to the regularly jam-packed winter night market and there's plenty of music across both days.

Join Poh Ling Yeow and the crew at Jam Face on Friday night for a ticketed 'Crunch Club' four course, French inspired menu at only $60 per person. Text 0420394483 to book.

On Saturday night you can join Les Deux Coqs at a long table dinner to celebrate Bastille Day in authentic French bistro style. Dine inside the Adelaide Central market (after hours) from 6.30pm and enjoy five courses of fine French food and wine. This dinner is a fantastic opportunity to taste their handcrafted charcuterie and authentic French patisserie that's fast becoming an Adelaide favourite. Book here.

Other treats include a crepe pop up by Market Bread Bar from 9am - 2pm on Saturday and cooking demonstrations in the community kitchen on both days. Why not head on in Saturday morning for the activities and get a 'Tricolore' face painting, just like in Paris?

For those who have searched Adelaide, we've found the best French style baguettes, cheeses, coffees and treats at the Central Market. It'll become a weekend pilgrimage into the city to pick up some treats, just to remind yourself of what the food is really like in France.

The Adelaide Central Market is the place to be if you want to enjoy some French culture and fine food and wine this Bastille Day weekend, the 12th and 13th of July 2019. The full program is available here.
