Basketball Leagues

A regular pick up game is difficult to come by in New York City. If you're looking to get some 3-on-3 action going, work on that perimeter shot, or just socialize in an active way, there are several adult sports leagues in the city that let you do just that, whether you're a casual or competitive player. Most have year-round seasons, so here's a look at what's coming up in the winter.

With nearly 400 teams, the N.Y. Urban Professionals Basketball league is one of the biggest in the city for both men's and women's hoops competition.

Next up for the league is the winter season, beginning the week of December 7. The three-month session gets you playing each week, with one scrimmage, 12 games and divisional and inter-divisional playoffs at gyms all over Manhattan.

Sign up by team ($1,840 per team of 10), or as an individual ($184), with cost including court fees, referee fees and tee-shirts. Your team will be ranked based on pre-season scrimmages, starting November 16, or, if you don't have a team, head to the open scrimmage on December 1 and get on one.

Have a corporate office you'd make your own dream team with? The Corporate League has gotten young male professionals duking it out for nearly 40 years.

This league is all about customization - you can choose your schedule, where you play in Manhattan, and at what level (from teams with ex-college players to those who never had a chance).

The 10-game winter season kicks off the week of December 7, with the final two fighting over the championship at Madison Square Garden. Sign up today for your chance to play on the famed court. Registration fee is $2,100 per team, including 10 jerseys.

The New York City Gay Basketball League formed in fall 2006 to provide an athletic environment free of discrimination for members and friends of the LGBT community, as well as work to eliminate negative stereotypes associated with LGBT athletics. And, of course, to play some basketball.

While in the middle of their fall season right now, check back on their website or join their mailing lists for information about their spring season, which will provide a men's division ($175) and a women's division ($130).

Want to put your time and money to a good cause? Then ZogSports may be the league for you. Their "Play for your Cause" motto lets you compete and get in shape, while also raising money for a charity of your choice, as a percentage of the company's profit goes to charity, and prize money from their sponsors goes to the winning team's charity of choice.

This winter features 3-on-3 co-ed and 3-on-3 men's basketball, beginning January 4 with registration $145 for individuals and $720 for teams if you sign up between November 9 and November 18 ($155 and $820 respectively between November 19 and December 4), so early bird gets the worm. The season includes 8 games and 1 scrimmage for both. There is also 4-on-4 full court men's basketball beginning January 10, with the price $140 per person for early registration ($150 for regular); for teams, early registration is $950, or $1,050 for regular. The season includes 7 games and 1 scrimmage.

Like the other leagues, levels of play vary depending on skill and competitiveness. And, for those who like to drink when all's said and done, there are organized happy hours after each game. Sounds like a win-win situation.
