I love getting out and about in Brisbane and being active with our 3 primary school boys. I also have a blog about mindfulness and self compassion
Changing lives one basket at a time
It's human nature to want to help but we often don't know how, or which cause to choose. Instead of a big decision, the Brisbane Basket Brigade have come up with an easy giving strategy - become a Basket Buddy.

miles and miles of smiles on packing day

Brisbane Basket Brigade is run entirely by volunteers. For 20 years they've worked with grassroots organisations to deliver food, gifts and hope to those who need it most at Christmas

"Our goal in 2016 is to deliver 1,800 baskets to benefit 700 households. In addition to this, we are also aiming to provide 50 specific food & gifts baskets for the elderly and the homeless in 2016", said Graeme Sherlock, Coordinator, Brisbane Basket Brigade.

This year, Basket Brigade is running a new program - Basket Buddies. It aims to build a community of volunteers across the Brisbane area who are willing to add one extra (specific) item to their grocery shopping each week leading up to Christmas. All items will be added to the food and gift baskets delivered on 11 December.

gifts of all shapes and sizes ready to go

The baskets are given anonymously, with a note letting the recipient know that someone is thinking of them, to take care of themselves and if one day they find themselves in a position to help another then please do so.

Baskets are delivered all over Brisbane and there are Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast Basket brigades too.

I've signed up, and I'm excited to be a Basket Buddy. I've got the list of items to buy each week. I'll take the organiser's suggestion, and look for these items when on special. In 16 weeks I'll have put away enough for a hamper for a family in need.

Basket Buddies started on 8 August, but don't worry, still register and you can catch up, or just start from now.

My husband and I had been involved with Basket Brigade, before we had children. This year we are getting back into it … and bringing the kids along to Packing Day. I'm looking forward to being involved as a family, and an opportunity for us to talk about our values of gratitude and giving to others.
