A quiet oasis in the bustling heart of Surry Hills
While it might not be the latest trendy cafe to open in the Surry Hills area, Basket Brothers is serving some honest good coffee and food to tourists and locals.

We ventured into the city for some brunch. My friends know I love a good brunch, particularly on a weekend. Basket Brothers is situated quite comfortably on the fringe of CBD and neighbouring Surry Hills. It is a great cosy corner venue, just five-minute walk from Sydney Central train station.

Cozy cafe atmosphere

It was quite busy as we walked in but the friendly staff helped us settle into a comfortable seat by the window, overlooking the busy Elizabeth Street. The cafe has plenty of space with some larger tables for group meetup.

The decor at Basket Brothers is modern and clean. The entire space is quite light and airy, the floor to ceiling windows provide an abundance of natural light. I preferred this kind of ambience as opposed to the trendy dark moody kind. This is the type of cafe suitable for a business meeting, brunch catch up or taking mum out for a treat.

Morning Cappuccino

We started with some soul-warming coffee to wake us up. The delicate coffee art was beautiful to look at.

Beautiful coffee art

Basket Brothers offers a great mix of healthy dishes and indulgent treats. The all-day breakfast menu looked fantastic with Organic House Granola ($10), Mango & Guava Bircher Muesli ($10) on the same menu as The Brothers World Famous B&E roll - Tradies friendly ($10) or the French Toast with chocolate soil and maple syrup ($17.50).

Veggie Board $23 (2 eggs, truffled mushrooms, fresh avo, haloumi, hash brown, wilted spinach, roasted tomato, house relish & sourdough)

Everything on the menu looked so appealing and we struggled to decide where to start, but when in doubt, we go for the big Veggie Basket to share. We could not contain our excitement when the staff brought out a long wooden board. There was an abundant supply of food!

Filling and delicious!

The crispy golden hash brown in the middle was surrounded by truffled mushrooms, halloumi, fresh avocado, wilted spinach, 2 sunny fried eggs, served with house relish and toasty sourdough.

Sunny up

The fried eggs were so beautiful. The truffled mushroom was amazingly delicious and we wished there were more. The Veggie Platter was a nice dish to share!

Sizzling ShakShuka $18

We were informed the new winter menu will be out in a couple of weeks and the staff highly recommended their winter signature, Sizzling ShakShuka, which has 2 running eggs, chorizo, capsicum, Roma tomatoes and fresh herbs cooked in hot skillet served with toast. This spicy Shakshuka was an easy and satisfying one-pot wonder!

Delicious and Nutritious dish

There were loads of veggie hidden under the poached eggs and the grilled chorizo sausages. The tomato-based sauce was incredibly moreish and I felt recharged after this dish.

Sweet potato chips with spiced mayo $7.00

We also ordered a mixed berry smoothie and a basket of sweet potato chips to share.

I found myself relaxing and spending time at Basket Brothers. You don't really have to move as the world comes to you. It is genuinely a cosy laid back place where you can watch cars zoom through Elizabeth Street and interesting Surry Hills locals pass by.

A hearty brunch spread

I'd definitely want to try the entire new winter menu next time.
