Only a short 30-minute drive from Geelong through the Bellarine Peninsula, you will find wonderful wineries and cafes. Basils Farm was one we visited recently, with sea views of Swan bay.

Basil Halsall was one of its previous owners, who farmed various crops on the site.

Whilst Basil has moved on, the property still carries his name and is also home to some of his tools, bike parts and farm machinery including a historic harvester and wheat chaff.

Every Sunday, from September to April, from 12:30- 3:30, you can chill out and enjoy their Sunday Sessions - a relaxed vibe, featuring acoustic tunes from live talented local musicians playing outdoors, entertaining visitors in the Pavilion and Gardens.

Basils Cafe and Pavilion is open for lunch - with reservations only, full menu. Check out their current menu here. We ordered fish of the day, which was local and freshly caught! The dessert was a Citrus tart with a serving of watermelon and plum salad. A nice refreshing summer combination indeed.

Basils Bar - you can't miss it - it is a rustic / retro outdoor caravan and is open for walk-ins (no bookings required, subject to weather) from 12pm to 4pm. Tables subject to availability. Basils Bar Menu only.

Around the corner, you will find The Cellar Door which offers wine taste testings, open from 11am to 5pm on weekends. Maximum 6 people at a time. Walk-in's only.

Enjoy tastings inside the Cellar Door or outside overlooking the vineyards, in a rustic setting under the giant cypress trees. The perfect place to catch up with family & friends! Upon entering the Cellar Door, you will discover a produce table with seasonal raw honey (from onsite and local Bellarine hives), plus chutneys and jams (subject to availability).

Ray Nadeson of Lethbridge Wines in the Moorabool Valley is the winemaker of the Basils Farm's range of wines and is guided by the wineries artisan winemaking principles. The Basils Farm range of wines includes Sparkling, Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.

So why not sit amongst the mature fig and citrus trees and absorb the breathtaking views across the lawned area and potager garden to Swan Bay and the historic township of Queenscliff.

There's also a sandpit for the kids to explore and have fun, playing outdoor games or exploring the edible garden.

Dogs at Basils Farm are welcome, as long as they are well-behaved and can be placed on a leash. Don't forget to bring / take away clean up bags with you. Please also ensure you keep your dog off the gardens.

The seasonal menu is fresh with produce picked straight from the potager gardens to the table. Meander through rows of herbs, tomatoes, bok choy and more - it's a gardener's haven.

After lunch, we explored the rest of the surrounds and were greeted by one large Ilama who was quite friendly.

A great day trip for the whole family with loads to explore on the property. So whether you love gardens, have a palate for wine tasting, grazing outdoors on a cheese platter, or indulging on dessert, you won't be disappointed! Save this on your to-do list!

Sounds like a great location. The Bellarine Peninsula is a much underrated destination. Just a ferry ride from the Mornington one.
