I booked into Base when looking for city accommodation at the last minute. Everything else was several hundreds of dollars. Base was offering an ensuite room for $100. It seemed a bargain, and it was.

I wasn't expecting much. Base is definitely a backpacker's. Checking in I saw that towels were $10 to hire ($20 for beach towels), and ads for backpacker activities adorn the walls. The ground floor is home to a chill-out room, ping-pong tables and a bar.

When we got to our room I was surprised. We had been given towels, for which I was grateful after the sign downstairs. They had even given us little shampoos and conditioners. There was no wardrobe but we didn't need one. The linen was clean and fresh, the room itself was clean (if not particularly roomy) and everything needed was there.

There was one drawback - only a tiny window and no view. This room was not for the claustrophobic.

For the price, this room felt like a bargain. Accommodation in St Kilda isn't the cheapest on the market, and we had both privacy and a bathroom. For those of a sober frame of mind, request the third floor. Everything further down gets quite a bit of noise from the bar (although complimentary earplugs are supplied).
