The challenge: get to eight of Perth's bars in the shortest time possible
The solution: Brookfield Place
Ok, so I'm not going to suggest you actually try to visit eight venues in one session, as that would fly entirely in the face of all responsible alcohol serving guidelines, and I would never advocate such crazy behaviour. But just say you were attempting such a feat, I could not think of a better spot to give it a crack than Brookfield Place.
It can be thirsty work pounding those keyboards, staring at those screens and generally doing what people who work in offices do. So it makes sense that if you're going to create one of Perth's highest density office complexes, then you had better make sure you can keep the inhabitants of those offices well hydrated. The creators of Brookfield Place have certainly done their due diligence here, with eight of Perth's best venues all within a stone's throw of each other. So what venues do I speak of and what can you expect from them?
Starting at the top (literally) we have Bob's Bar, a tribute to Australia's third longest-serving prime minister and the only one that held a world record for skulling beer, an awesome feat for anyone, never mind a politician. Bob's is one of a growing number of rooftop bars in Perth and is a great choice day or night, and on those rare occasions in Perth when there's a bit of rain around, the electric roof make sure it's not just your martini that stays dry.
Heading down the stairs of the same building takes you into The Apple Daily Bar and Eating House. Named after the Hong Kong daily newspaper bearing the same name, this is a great choice if you fancy the idea of indulging in south east Asian culinary delights while quaffing craft beer and wine produced right here in Western Australia.
Continue down the stairs (yes there are a lot of them), and you'll find yourself in what has quickly become one of Perth's best known hospitality environments, the iconic Print Hall Bar & Dining Room. With a multi-million dollar wine cellar and décor to match, this multi-level bar and dining space (the only such establishment in Perth), takes its inspiration from the previous use of the building, which was the original building of the West Australian newspaper.
Continuing with the themes of very impressive wine lists and creating bars from the spaces of former notable buildings, The Trustee is next on our list. With its art deco ceilings and a good dose of brass, The Trustee certainly looks the part, and if you're looking for something a bit more substantial, get yourself settled in for some of the best modern Australian cuisine Perth has to offer in the Brasserie.
If you appreciate that 1920s speakeasy vibe then you should definitely check out Bobeche. The prices may be high, (many of the cocktails are $20 ), but the lighting is low, adding to that prohibition-style ambiance.
The smallest of all the featured bars here, we love what the guys have done with Choo Choo's. They're big fans of popcorn down here, where they provide you bowls of the stuff infused with their own choice of seasonings. With a laid back atmosphere, just pull up a stool to the bar and have a chat to whoever else has decided to pop it at that time.
Fantastic cocktails aren't normally the first things that pop in your head when you think of Japanese restaurants, but the food definitely isn't the only reason for penciling a visit to Sushia into that calendar.
We're almost at the end of our list of Brookfield Place's great selection of bars, but we can't finish without mentioning Bar Lafayette. Yet another bar that makes you feel as if you've transported back into another time, Bar Lafayette is housed in the former surrounds of the Perth Technical School. With a great selection of beers, wines and things to munch on, as well as a number of cosy spots to chill out in, Bar Lafayette is another welcome addition to this part of the CBD.
So there you have them. Eight great reasons to get yourself better acquainted with this section of Perth. From cool, dark, intimate spaces, to being lightly sprayed with refreshing mist as you knock back a cold one on a rooftop, the Brookfield Place area has got all your senses covered.
