Surroundings of rugged mountains, ravines, lush rainforest, rich and varied wildlife and the sounds of roaring tumbling waterfalls make Barron Falls Lookout a nature and outdoor enthusiast's dream come true!
This lookout is situated in one of the most popular National Parks in North Queensland- the World-Heritage Listed Barron Gorge National Park, which is nestled between Cairns and Kuranda. indubitably captures the true power of nature and the great outdoors, making you want to come back for more.
Barron Falls Lookout is possibly the most famous waterfall lookout in North Queensland and is visited by thousands of locals and tourists alike each year.
Upon arrival at the beginning of the boardwalk, which leads to the Lookout, it becomes understandable why this waterfall lookout is so magical and popular.
Gentle roars can be heard from the car park, causing anticipation on what is yet to come (we visited in dry season… so I can just imagine the sounds during wet season!)
The well-maintained boardwalk is a lovely stroll through rich, lush rainforest with an open eucalypt forest canopy.
The boardwalk is approximately a 1.2km return walk and is an elevated, wheelchair-accessible walkway. It is suspended high above the forest floor, making you feel that you are almost walking sky-high through the mighty canopies, and transverses its way through exuberant rainforest leading to the viewing platform where offerings of a full frontal aspect of the spectacular falls can be seen and enjoyed.
The nature and culture of Barron Falls, as well as the surrounding gorge area, can be discovered with the wayside signs at the beginning and the end of the boardwalk track.
The track also offers three separate Lookouts that provide very different perspectives of the phenomenal craggy-faced waterfall.
The main viewing platform not only offers uninterrupted views over the stunning gorge and picturesque Barron Falls, glimpses of the gondolas from the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway can also be seen gliding above the far-side of the gorge and the Kuranda Scenic Railway tourist train pulls into the platform below the Lookout.
During wet season you will be enveloped with clouds of mist as the falls come to full thunder, magically pouring down to the stunning gorge and during the dry months the 260-metre Barron Falls tumbles endlessly over water-sculptured rocks of the narrow gorge walls and into the deep rainforest-lined chasm of the Barron Gorge.
Barron Falls Lookout Boardwalk Track also offers an array of birdwatching opportunities as well as being a gateway to beautiful walks, treks and hikes.
Whether you are an outdoor and nature enthusiast or not, Barron Falls Lookout Boardwalk Track will undoubtedly impress all ages. It is a truly magical attraction that must be added on the bucket list and itinerary!
Barron Falls Lookout can be accessed via Barron Falls Road or from the tourist train, which stops at the Barron Falls Railway Station. Skyrail's cable car gondolas offer an alternative view from above too.
From the car park at Barron Falls Road, follow the sign to the Boardwalk and from here the spectacular easily accessible walk begins winding its way through the rainforest with plenty of seats and stops on the way to the viewing platform where the Lookout is located.
