Fancy a wine tasting and lunch in the beautifully kept grounds of a family-owned winery in the Adelaide Hills? Barristers Block Wines is just out of Woodside in the bucolic Onkaparinga Valley and it's hard to believe that it's only 45 minutes from the city.
Having spent a fair bit of time traipsing around the Adelaide Hills, we'd passed the green grounds of Barristers Block before and seen how popular it is. Finally, we decided to step inside and try it for ourselves. Passing through the tall lines of trees into the garden is like being whisked away to one of those classic country hills scenes.
If you're lucky enough to be seated outside under the trees, then make sure to look around the green and shaded lawns. Look over the deer and geese enclosure with its cute little lake to an expansive view of grapevines that stretch up the hill to the sky.
Park the car on arrival and head on into the tasting stables to check in for your educational wine tasting in the stables - or head straight to the cellar to door to check in for the two lunch sittings the kitchen offers from 11am to 4.30pm.
Sit inside the cellar door and undercover and stay warm on the wet and windy days or enjoy alfresco dining in the superb outdoor setting on glorious early summer weekday, like the day we spent there. There's heaps of space for the kids to run around and play in the sandpit - you can view the animals in their enclosure or play quoits or bocce on the immaculate lawns.
Lunches are a package menu at a per-person price and consist of a shared charcuterie, cheese and fruit platter and a choice of pizza options each. The platters are packed with all sorts of delicious local treats and the pizzas are simply scrumptious. Weekend lunches get more with a side of fries and petit fours to finish. On out visit, there were arancini balls going around, which everybody loved.
The focus here is on the cellar door and they offer a wide range of Barristers Block varietal wines with quite a bit of age and depth. There's beers on tap by Uraidla Brewing, local ciders, and of course soft drinks, coffee, and tea.
Kids are well catered for with food and drink menu options of their own like fish and chips or ham and pineapple pizza.
Barristers Block is open for lunch seven days and wine tastings from 11am – 5pm. Bookings for both are required.
