The Barossa is famous for top quality wine and premium shiraz, but that doesn't mean you can't pick up a genuine bargain if you know where to look.

Modest ads have started appearing in the local newspapers again announcing "Wine sale" and "Genuine Cellar Clearance". To the uninitiated this would be dismissible but to those who know, or curious enough to find out, this is the half yearly massive warehouse clearance at Dorrien Estate Winery that excites and delights anyone who has had the pleasure of going before.

The wine sale takes place inside the winery-come-warehouse itself, where cases of every variety, blend, region and colour are stacked high along the tanks and barrel racks. There is no catalog to study, it's down to walking the warehouse and letting your instincts guide you or looking for that favourite label you know or are inspired to try. Towering blocks of boxes on pallets are labelled and grouped in sections by variety and case price, starting as low as $30.

The selection and logistic operation is well planned and rehearsed, there are always plenty of staff to help you stack a trolley and mark down your selections. Once you have your bounty it is a quick visit to the cashier while your selection is moved to a collection bay to bring your car around, collect and you are on your way.

Dorrien Estate is a state-of-the-art wine making facility specialising in small parcels of premium boutique wines for Australian growers and winemakers. With Cellarmasters managing distribution, there are wines available from many different regions within Australia and beyond.

While it's only a short drive from Adelaide to The Barossa, why not make a day of it? Get your wine bargains then meander over to the Barossa Farmers Markets for a hearty bacon and egg roll, delicious coffee and stock up on some artisan delights.

If you can fit your bike in the boot amongst all the wine and produce, get around Barossa by Bike where you can discover even more of the Barossa. There are plenty of cellar doors accessible by bike where you'll often find an end of bin or export label bottle on sale to continue your bargain hunt.

The wine sale will run Saturday November 8th from 9am to 4pm but the tip is to get in early. Parking is available, enter off Siegersdorf road and follow the signs to enter the sale. Cash, Mastercard and Visa will be accepted.
