A place where you can have your cake and eat it too

The toughest choice is which cake you want to eat.

From small beginnings, grow great things. The proof is in the pudding (or cake) for Hayley Kersten, owner of Barossa Gourmet Cakes and Café in Nuriootpa.

After leaving a corporate career to look after her young family, Hayley has turned her passion for making cakes into a thriving gourmet cake shop and café. Located in Schaedel House on Murray Street in Nuriootpa, the boutique café offers a selection of sweet and savoury taste temptations that call you in from the main street.

You can enter the café via the stairs from the street or via the stroller and wheelchair friendly ramp through the entrance at the rear of the premises. Once inside, your first decision might be the toughest decision you have to make for the day. Should you choose the signature lemon cheesecake, the banana caramel pie, a decadent red velvet cake or one of the warm puddings?

Alternatively, you could have a delicious baked potato or a schnitzel. Whatever you choose, it will have been handmade, in-house that morning. Hayley is so committed to preparing all the food herself; she even has her own blend of coffee. Using a combination of the names of her children, the Ryka's Jem coffee blend is a delicious accompaniment to your cake or savoury selection.

If you enjoy eating outdoors, you can sit on the balcony of Schaedel House, the former home of cabinetmaker William Schaedel, built in 1875. As you enjoy your meal, you can watch the activity in the main street of Nuriootpa, or if you prefer a little quiet, you can sit in the courtyard behind the building. During the summer months, you might even be able to join a game of bocce with your companions.
